Today in the Queen’s Speech a bill aimed at “modernising” the current planning system was announced. While largely a positive step, our co-director David Banister highlights some areas for consideration.
David said: “The Planning Bill represents a positive opportunity for our industry. Any reduction of red tape is welcomed and the proposed changes will allow architects to work faster and be more responsive. However, as a firm committed to delivering positive change through what we do, it is important that we don’t focus solely on numbers. Building more houses is important, but there needs to be a focus on quality for their inhabitants, affordability and sustainability. There also needs to be more clarity and thought around proposed ‘zoning’ plans, so that the relationship between the buildings we create, the social setting and the local environment are fully considered.”
